First presenter: Mapping Historical Resources, Harrisonburg, VA, Kevin Borg, History Department
For this presenter, I critiqued visuals that were in my opinion both representational, as well as analytical. The visuals consisted of maps of the city Harrisonburg, displayed on Google Earth in both it's most current form overlapped by a map of the city in 1912. The visuals came from microfilm copies of the maps that were scanned and printed out and later analyzed by both the presenter and James Madison University students. The purpose of these visuals are to help JMU students understand how Harrisonburg has changed throughout history and to see if certain landmarks and/or pieces of the city are still in existence today. It can also be used as a resource for students to look at and analyze. The intended audience for the visuals are JMU students. The maps of Harrisonburg are an accurate representation of the city of Harrisonburg and how it has changed. These visuals helped me gain more understanding of the subject because it has allowed me to see what has existed in the past and what exists today by using Google Earth to fade in and out on the map. The visuals were created in Google Earth, as well as Google Earth Pro. Photoshop was also used to cut out pieces of the map created in 1912 and overlap it onto the current map. The equipment used to display these visuals was Google Earth. The voices of the students are unheard in these visuals because they are not able to put in their input on what they discovered from analyzing and researching for this project.
Second presenter: Interactive Geologic Maps of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley Region - Steve Whitmeyer, Geology & Environmental Science.
For this presenter, I was critiquing a representational map of parts of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley Region. The map included cross sections, as well as the the rocks found in the area represented by color. The map also include pictures of the rock when clicking on a certain component. The visuals were created by the presenter and his colleagues in coordination with Google Earth and Google Maps. The purpose of the visuals are for education and research, as well as building a network for the state that provides different links that provide information about that particular part of Virginia. The intended audiences are geologists, students, the public, or whoever wants to use the map for any reason. The map is an actual representation of locations in Virginia that provide data and pictures. These visuals have helped me understand what else Google Earth can be used for and what kinds of rocks are located in different parts of Virginia. The visuals were most likely created in Google Earth Pro and were displayed through this software program, as well as a web plug-in which can be accessed from a website. Before attending this event, I had no idea what a web plug-in was.
